How to Register as a Private Candidate for SEA 2027 in Trinidad & Tobago
If your child will be writing the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) in 2027 but is not being registered through a Ministry of Education–registered school, you may need to register them as a private candidate.
The Ministry of Education has officially opened the registration period for SEA 2027 private candidates. Here’s a simple breakdown of who needs to register, what you need to bring, and how to complete the process.

Who needs to register as a private candidate?
According to the Ministry of Education, private candidate registration applies to:
Students who are homeschooled
Students attending private schools that are not registered with the Ministry of Education
Returning nationals
The SEA 2027 Student Entry Form also asks parents to indicate whether their child is currently being homeschooled or attending an unregistered private primary school.
If your child attends a registered public or private school and is being entered for SEA through that school, this private registration process would generally not apply.
When is SEA 2027 private candidate registration?
Registration runs from:
Monday 14th September 2026 to Friday 23rd October 2026.
The Ministry's instructions state that the completed registration form must be taken to one of the designated registration offices during this period. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.
I strongly recommend that parents do not wait until the final few days to complete registration. Give yourself enough time to check that the form is completed correctly and that you have all the required documents.
Where do I register?
Completed forms must be submitted in person.
For families in Trinidad, registration is done at:
Examinations Unit #5 St. Vincent StreetPort of Spain, Trinidad
For families in Tobago:
Division of Education, Innovation and Energy Dutch Fort Plaza, Dutch FortScarborough, Tobago
The form should be completed in BLOCK LETTERS using blue or black ink before being taken to the appropriate office.
What documents do I need?
Parents/guardians should prepare the following:
1. The completed SEA 2027 Private Candidate Student Entry Form
Make sure all required sections are completed before going to the Ministry.
2. Your child's electronic birth certificate
The Ministry requires the original electronic birth certificate for verification.
3. Parent/guardian identification
Bring the required original identification and a copy.
4. Additional documentation, where applicable
Foreign students will need documentation showing their legal status in Trinidad and Tobago. A legal guardian who is registering a child should also have the relevant legal documentation or court order.
The Ministry's instructions specify that the original and one copy of requested documents should be provided, with the originals returned after verification.
Choosing your secondary schools
The registration form includes space for four secondary-school choices:
1st Choice → 2nd Choice → 3rd Choice → 4th Choice
Parents must use the correct school codes when completing this section.
Take some time with this part of the application. Your child's school choices should be discussed carefully rather than simply selecting four schools at the last minute.
What if my child needs special concessions?
This is particularly important for parents of children with diagnosed learning disabilities or other conditions.
Section C – Special Concessions allows parents to indicate diagnosed:
Physical impairments
Hearing impairments
Visual impairments
Learning disabilities
Other conditions
The form states that special concessions may be granted to qualifying students and that applications must be made using the Ministry's prescribed Special Concessions forms.
Importantly, the SEA entry form specifically says not to attach supporting documents to the entry form itself.
The notice accompanying the registration information gives Friday 31st July 2026 as the deadline for online Special Concessions applications. Parents whose children require accommodations should therefore pay particular attention to this separate process.
What if I have twins or triplets writing SEA?
There is also a specific section of the form for multiple births (twins and triplets).
Parents are asked to provide information about the siblings, including their names, dates of birth, gender, birth certificate PIN numbers and the schools they currently attend, if applicable.
Before you submit your form
Before heading to the Ministry, double-check everything.
Make sure the form is completed in block letters using blue or black ink, your child's information is accurate, the correct school and religion codes have been used, your four school choices are entered correctly, and you have the originals and copies of the required documents.
The parent or guardian must also complete and sign the declaration confirming that the information provided is true and correct.
A quick note for homeschooling parents
If you're homeschooling your child and preparing for SEA 2027 independently, registration for SEA and preparation for SEA are two separate things.
Registering your child ensures that they are entered as a candidate. From there, you still want to make sure that your child's preparation covers the Mathematics, English Language Arts and Writing expectations of the SEA curriculum, while also developing the reasoning, problem-solving and time-management skills needed for the examination.
For Mathematics in particular, I encourage parents not to make SEA preparation solely about completing past papers. Strong numeracy foundations, logical reasoning, problem-solving and the ability to explain mathematical thinking are just as important.
